I first knew of Pudgie as a distant member and friend of the family. I got to know him over twenty years ago when he would stop at the cafe within Mayo and slap a quarter on the register for a cup of coffee. He would say, “there you go buddy!” I worked in the back of the restaurant but I would always make time to come out and visit with my friend. We talked a lot, and within every conversation he would reaffirm our friendship with, “I like you, buddy” in which I would reply, “I like you to, Gene.” He was a kind and gentle man. I will miss you, buddy.

I remember Eugene from when I worked for Riverfront in the 1990’s. I am so glad I ran into him in the past year at King St Kitchen and got to chat with him. What a good-hearted guy. A memory I have of Eugene is when he sang What a Friend We Have in Jesus when we were talking about someone who had passed away, it still brings tears to my eyes. My condolences to Jan, his sister, and the rest of his family and loved ones.
