George E. Osterhout, 82, of Onalaska passed away Friday, January 13, 2017 at Bethany Saint Joseph Care Center, La Crosse, WI. He was born in La Crosse on August 9, 1934 to Mark and Helen (Smith) Osterhout. Upon graduation from Watertown High School, Watertown, WI, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1952. George lived in Los Angeles until 1976 when he returned to Wisconsin. On October 22, 1977 George married Alyce (West) Washburn.
George was Director of Operations at Kickapoo Oil Company, and built 58 convenient stores throughout Wisconsin. Served as an Alderman for ten years on the Onalaska City Council, two terms as president of the council and in 1992 was elected Mayor and served two terms. Two of his major accomplishments were the completion of the Onalaska Omni Center and establishing the first long range plan for Onalaska. He was President of Onalaska Rotary and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Quarterback Club. He was a member of the Chancellor's Community Council for UW-La Crosse. He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching the UW-La Crosse Eagles football and basketball teams and enjoyed spending time drinking coffee and bantering about football with the guys at Cartwright Center. He was a proud grandpa attending his grandsons' sports and musical events. They were the joys of his life.
