It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Rodney Dane Vaningan on January 26, 2017. He will be remembered for the way he lived his life, full of love, hope and good humor.
Rod was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 27, 1966. He graduated from Melrose-Mindoro High School in 1984 where he met his beloved Marlene (Macdonald). Quickly becoming an integral part of the Macdonald family, he helped them run the Riverview Inn Supper Club and River Bend Golf Course. United in marriage with his love Marlene on December 22, 1990; they built their home in North Bend. They worked side-by-side to make the golf course a place for everyone to enjoy the things Rod loved; family, friends, and the outdoors. They were blessed with three children; Logan, Alexis, and Skylar, all who have adopted all of Rod’s best qualities as they’ve grown into kind, dedicated, and fun-loving young adults. Rod’s children learned many valuable lessons from him, including that if your underwear is dirty just flip it inside-out and that shirt sleeves are always optional if you have a pair of scissors.
Rod was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt, golf and watch Shark Week. He loved to watch movies and quote them incessantly and his family and friends were often the targets of his good natured pranks. He was a skilled cook and he continually shared his talents with his family, friends, and the community.
His family was blessed to love and be fiercely loved by him. This includes a large group of friends who were drawn in by his big heart and even bigger smile. He was always willing to lend a hand and his generous spirit was unwavering, even when his health faltered. Rod was a survivor of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at 31 and he bravely battled pancreatic cancer since 2011.
He is survived by his wife and children, brother Bob and wife Darlene, sister Rayna Wortman (Vaningan) and husband Steve, sister Randee Vaningan, cousin/brother Ray Payne; and parents James and Brenda Vaningan. Brothers-in-law Mark (Donna) Macdonald, Dave (Jane) Macdonald, Matt (Rita) Macdonald, Joe (Kim) Macdonald and sisters-in-law Sandy (Tim) Tranberg, and Agnes Macdonald. He had twenty-one adoring nieces and nephews, including four god-children, many cousins, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by father and mother-in-law John and Ardes Macdonald, grandparents Bill and Hilda Pliner and John and Willie Mae Hooper, brother-in-law Mike Macdonald, and beloved friend Rich Michel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and again on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
