Joseph V. Johnson, 83, of Holmen, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Mulder Health Care Center in West Salem. He was born in Virginia on August 28, 1933 to Alfod and Ellen (Verlander) Johnson. Joseph served as a Corporal in the United States Army. He later married Darlene F. Schams on October 19, 1952 and together they celebrated 64 years of marriage. Joseph worked for Trane Company for over 42 years.
Joseph enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, hunting and painting milk cans. He was also an avid gun collector and a huge fan of Wisconsin sports, especially the Green Bay Packers.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, three children; Lynn Headington, Wanda (LeRoy) Hougom, and Joey V. (Mona Denstad) Johnson Jr., grandchildren; Tammy (Jason) Hoch, Trent Headington, Trisha (Troy) Soiney, Jason (Kelly) Hougom, Tyler (Jenny) Hougom, Joey (Courtney) Johnson III, Cindy Johnson, Amber Johnson, Ashley Johnson, Sarah and John Denstad. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; Kaylor, Kaiser and Kinley Soiney, Brittney, Camaron and Cody Hoch and Ivy C. Hougom, and sisters-in-law; Donamae Schlaver and Deb (Roger) Werner.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alfod and Ellen Johnson, mother and father in law, Verina and John Schams, brother, Ashby Johnson, sister, Virginia Clark, brothers-in-law, Melvin Schams and Carroll "Red" Schlaver, and a son-in-law, Lyle B. Headington.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 7th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1201 Main Street, Onalaska. The Reverend William Bader will officiate. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday at the church from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
