Obituary for LaVonne F. Lyons

LaVonne Ferne Lyons, 96, of Onalaska died Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at the Onalaska Care Center.
LaVonne was born March 10, 1920, in La Crosse, WI, to George and Helen (Wolter) Hansen. She grew up in La Crosse and graduated from Central High School in 1937 at the age of 16. She was a long-time employee of the La Crosse Tribune (1937-1945 and 1956-1985). On Oct. 17, 1942, she married Glenn J. Lyons in La Crosse. They were blessed with one daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” in 1946.
LaVonne “Nan” loved being a mother, grandmother to her two grandsons, and great-grandmother to her five great-grandchildren. Her family and many friends were blessed by her strength, beautiful smile, quick wit, and sense of humor. She freely gave her time to help others. She was amember of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught kindergarten Sunday School for over 40 years, and participated in Bible Studyand Ladies Aid. She enjoyed needlework and was amember of theCoulee Country Chapter – EGA. She was a long-time volunteer at the Onalaska Care Center, received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2005, and served as secretary of the Care Center Auxiliary. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and the Onalaska Senior Citizens. She loved to travel, attend her grandsons’ sporting events/activities, and collect anything ladybug. She also took advantage of every opportunity to play cards and Scrabble with her friends.
LaVonne is survived by her daughter, Cindy Dietrich, of Onalaska; a grandson, John Dietrich II, wife Jackie, and their children, Josephine “Josie”, John III “Trey”, and Jackson of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; grandson, Peter Dietrich, wife Lisa, and their children, William and Samuel of Middleton, WI; her 5 nieces: Karen (Ron) Toshner of Greenville, WI; Vicki (Darrell) Neumann of Westby, WI; Pam (Larry) McTaggert of Sparta, WI; Deborah (Dewey) Zwicker of Appleton, WI; and Mary (Maurice) Case of New Zealand; and her nephew Jim (Shirley) Lind of Minneapolis, MN.
LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, on June 26, 1956; her parents; her son-in-law, John Dietrich; her brothers and their wives: Warren (Kathleen) Hansen and Donald (Ivadell) Hansen; and her sister-in-law and husband, Ernestine (Carl) Lind.
La Vonne resided at the Onalaska Care Center for the last 6 years where she was often referred to as “Ladybug.” We are grateful for the wonderful care she received there.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1201 Main Street, Onalaska. The Reverend Norris Baumann will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
