Buddy was born in La Crosse on November 19, 1932 to Andrew Haas and Elizabeth Freismuth of Onalaska. Buddy spent part of his childhood at home and part as a resident at Northern Wisconsin Colony and Training School. As an adult he spent several years living with his father at their home on Sand Lake Road, Onalaska.
