Ruby S. Thompson, 91, of Onalaska, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017. She was born October 28, 1925 to Rudolph and Stella (Rochester) Olson. She married Lester Thompson on November 1, 1944 and together they celebrated 68 years of marriage until Lester's passing on November 27, 2012. They lived together in Onalaska for 61 years.
Ruby grew up in Long Coulee near Holmen, where she attended school up to the 5th grade. She played in the orchestra in Holmen for 5 years and in her Junior year started to play the Trumpet for 1 1/2 years. She also taught herself to play the piano. She graduated from Holmen High School in 1943.
Ruby worked at the Holmen Canning Company for 2 years and at Sears Ladies Ready to Wear for 4 years, and along with her husband Lester ran Thompson's Small Engine Repair In Onalaska. She was the Secretary of the Ladies of ALCW and also the Secretary of Music of Mothers in Onalaska.
Ruby was a wonderful mother and homemaker for her family.She was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and their many accomplishments in life. She was a excellent cook and her family always looked forward to her delicious Christmas Norwegian meatballs and the best lefsa in the Midwest. She was proud of her Norwegian and Irish ancestry and belonged to the Sons of Norway of La Crosse. She is survived by her 5 children; Larry (Georgia) Thompson, Janet Hegy, Susan (Francis) Formanek, Laurie (Marty) Haas, and Randy (Maureen) Thompson, 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Darlene (Olson) Richardson and brother Rudolph (Jeanne) Olson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one grandson Philip Scheid, a sister, Lois Jacobson and the dog she loved Taffy".
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 410 Main Street, Onalaska. The Reverend Jason Stanton will officiate and burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Coulee Region Humane Society. Information and online condolences may be given to the family at
