Dennis Brent Wilkerson, 73, of Westby died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at Gundersen Health System.
He was born April 8, 1944, in La Crosse, to William and Betty (Schroeder) Wilkerson. Unfortunately, his parents were killed in a car accident when he was 7 years old, leaving him to be raised by relatives and foster families in Mount Pleasant, Texas. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1963. Dennis attended East Texas State University before joining the U.S. Air Force on February 26, 1965. He served until February 25, 1971, when he was honorably discharged. He worked as a computer operator in Technical Services and Support at Dairyland Power in La Crosse for 24 years (or as he called himself, “a high-tech redneck”). He retired in October of 2010.
Dennis is survived by his son Brent (Carrie) Wilkerson, step-daughter Nicole Lee; four grandchildren, Devin and Grace Wilkerson, Isaiah (Sonia) Freedom, Sammuel Davis, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his Aunt Margaret Talley, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Betty Wilkerson.
Dennis loved his nine acre family farm in Esofea, WI, where he enjoyed raising his dog, Sonny, feeding his birds and ducks, gardening, hunting, fishing, and picking blackberries. Though he lived most of his life in Wisconsin, he considered himself a Texan and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Dennis was a longtime, active member of the La Crosse Masonic Lodge and the area Zor Shriners organization. Dennis was very proud of his service to the U.S. Air Force, and he lived his life with great integrity a strong work ethic.
A Masonic service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse. Friends may visit from 3:30 p.m. to time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Masonic Lodge in La Crosse.
