Dr. Harold J. (Bud) Grau passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at Hillview Health Care Center, just two months shy of his 102nd birthday. He was born in Muscatine, Iowa, on February 14, 1916, to Fred C. and Mayme (Holliday) Grau. Bud married Jean E. Moore on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1936. She preceded him in death on January 3, 2008. They have three children: Barbara (Randy) Rogers of Prescott, AZ, Tom (Heidi) of La Crosse, and Steve (Davis Leigh) of Desert Hot Springs, CA; six grandchildren: Ericka (Paul) Barrera, John (Kerry) Grau, Meredith (Shaun) Porter, Nathaniel (Manda) Grau, Andrew Grau, and Melissa Grau; seven great-grandchildren: Lydia and Elijah Grau, Quintin and Vivian Porter, Thomas Aiden and Samantha Grau, and Greyson Bud Barrera.
Dr. Grau graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1947 and remained an avid Hawkeye football fan until his death. Following his internship in Duluth, MN, he started practice in Rapid City, SD, in 1948, where he practiced for 19 years. Bud and Jean then moved to Rancho Bernardo, CA, and he became the medical director of Scripps Clinic of Rancho Bernardo. After Dr. Grau’s retirement in 1981, he and Jean moved to Sun City, AZ, and they resided there until coming to La Crosse in 2004. Both Bud and Jean were very good golfers and played well into their later years.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Hillview for their excellent care of “Doc” during his years there, and especially Dr. David Rushlow for the great care he gave to both our mom and dad.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, memorials may be sent to Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse for medical education, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, or the donor’s choice. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
