Obituary for Martha E. Hanson

Martha E. (Howell) Hanson, 94 of La Crosse passed away February 14, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System. She was born in Hendersonville, NC on June 3, 1923 to Rev David and Maggie (Jaynes) Howell. She was a graduate of High Point University, High Point, NC and was twice elected President of her class. She was an employee with the State Department in Washington, DC during WWII. Martha married Wayne John Hanson "Tag" on November 28, 1945 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, La Crosse and he preceded her in death in May 1999. Martha was employed with the Trane Company for 34 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Trane Company 25 Year Club.
Martha always had kind words for her family and was extremely proud of them,. Her easy going smile will be forever remembered. She enjoyed treating them to a yearly holiday dinner at Westview Inn. She was a caring and giving mother and grandmother. Martha was known for maintaining a meticulous home and yard, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casinos.
Martha is survived by her son, David (Patti) Hanson of La Crosse; granddaughter, Tammy (Gary) Simmons of Holmen; grandson, Mark (Katie) Hanson of La Crosse; great grandchildren, Jacob and Courtney Simmons, and Alaina and Maxwell Hanson; step-great grandchild, Isaak Simmons; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Hugh (Laura) Howell; and three sisters, Lucile (Nile) Hunt, Clara (George) Needham, and Ruth (Bill) Johnson.
A private graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse with Reverend Brian Konopa officiating.
In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family would prefer your prayers.
The Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Hearten House II and Bethany on Cass for their compassionate care over the past few years. Also to Dr. Scott Cunningham, Niki Sires of Inclusa, 9-Center at Mayo, Dr. Sanda Cepoi, Dr. Swetha Karturi, Dr. Hillary Bingol, and the Palliative Care and Hospice Team at Mayo for the extraordinary and compassionate care given to Martha.
