Mary Helen (Auer) Ross, 85, of La Crosse, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 at her home. She was born July 29, 1932 in St. Paul, MN to Alfred and Nellie (Brand) Auer. Mary Helen studied art at College of St. Catherine. She married John H. Ross on August 22, 1953.
Mom was an impeccable seamstress, talented in all fields of needlework and enjoyed watercolor painting. Her creativity was endless. Her days began with the daily puzzles and crossword. Mary Helen enjoyed playing bridge and Mahjong with her friends. She held a variety of leadership positions in many organizations including Embroiderers' Guild of America, La Crosse Country Club Ladies Golfers, Girl Scouts and the YWCA. Mother was an active member and volunteer at the Cathedral parish.
Mom cherished family gatherings and bringing everyone together for a great meal. She loved surrounding herself with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mother filled the house with music at Christmastime.
She is survived by her husband, her children: John Ross of La Crosse, Rosanne (Karl) Maas of La Crosse, Susan (Jeffrey) Roers of Kildeer, IL, Barbara (Roy) Crutchfield of Hawthorn Woods, IL, Ellen Bossert of Boulder, CO and Christine (Paul) von Paumgartten of Whitefish Bay, WI. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Laura (Jeff) Windpassinger, Mark (Marilia) Hammond and Nick Maas; Andrew, Joseph, Thomas, Daniel and Benjamin Roers; Katherine, Matthew and Elizabeth Crutchfield; Grace and Jack Bossert; Grant, Rachel and Adam von Paumgartten; and by 4 great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Theodore Hammond; Katherine and Joseph Windpassinger.
She was preceded in death by an infant son Thomas Joseph Ross and by her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, 530 Main Street, La Crosse. Monsignor Charles Stoetzel will officiate and burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
