William "Bill" Gene Fregin, 86, of La Crosse passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Gundersen Health System surrounded by his loving wife, Jeanne and Mary. He was born in La Crosse on January 21, 1932 to Carl and Mildred Fregin. He graduated from Central High School in 1949 and attended the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, graduating in 1953. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army where he also served in the band as second chair trumpet player, stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. and was honorably discharged in 1955. He went on to get a Masters Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Bill was a teacher, guidance councilor, tutor and mentor to his students of Logan Junior High School for 30 plus years and a short time at Merril High School. Bill and Jeanne were members of Trinity Lutheran Church, where Bill enjoyed serving on the church council for many years. He loved cheering for the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers, but most of all he loved his wife and family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Kohls) of 32 years; children, Diane (Curt) Mosher of Chandler, AZ., Richard Fregin of Scottsdale, AZ., Linda Kelly (Fiance, Chris Boillot) of Phoenix, AZ., Douglas Frankinstein (special friend, Sue Gustafson) of Merriweather, MI., and Mary (Jim) Balikerof Middleton, WI.; grandchildren, Preston and Carson Kelly, Matt (Amanda) Frankenstein, Megan Saunby, and Tristen Grimm (fiance, Tony Patterson); great grandchildren, Trynia, Godric, Wynter and Gabe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Dick Leech, Karen and LeRoy Tietz, and Allan and Shirley Kohls; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Phyllis; father and mother-in-law, Alfred and Mildred Kohls, brothers-in-law, Harvey Kohls and Harold Winter; sisters-in-law, Joyce Kohls and Sharleen Winter; and one niece, Sheri Kaul.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Sill Street, La Crosse. Pastor Melinda Pupillo will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
