Viola Milda Sauer, 95, of La Crosse passed away at Bethany Riverside Nursing Home on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Vi was born December 24, 1922 to Nickolas and Emily (Blasing) Konter. She grew up on a farm near Arcadia, WI where at the age of 16 she met her future husband, LaVern W. Sauer who lived on a nearby farm. They were married September 22, 1941 and had two daughters, Sandra and Bonnie.
One of Vi’s proudest achievements was obtaining her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate and then working at Lutheran Hospital , now Gundersen Health System, for 25 years retiring from 3-Center (Orthopedics) at the hospital. Because she was such a kind, compassionate and caring person, this was a perfect job for her.
One of the ways she showed love for her family was through cooking. At special holiday dinners when everyone had eaten their fill, she would insist that her sons-in-law didn’t eat enough and would put more food on their plates and they dutifully ate everything whether they wanted it or not. Apple pies were her specialty dessert.
She is survived by her daughter Bonnie (Ron) Page and their children Jeramy (Jennifer) Page and Melissa (Brian) Ender, son-in-law Paul Paulson and his children Alan (Bonnie) Paulson and Jeffery (Julie) Paulson. She is further survived by great-grandchildren Adam and Isaac Paulson, Abigail, Zoey, and Brody Page, Emma, Anna, and Sophia Goyette, and Halle, Zoe, and Laken Ender. Further surviving her are many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband LaVern , daughter Sandra , brother
Arthur (Lorraine) Konter, sister Gladys (Wilford) Doelle , nephew Tom Thompson and niece Kathy Sauer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Holmen Lutheran Church, 228 Morris Street. Pastor Allison Cobb will officiate and burial will be in Onalaska Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
The Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Vi’s family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful, caring staff at Bethany Lutheran Homes where she resided the past several years—Bethany on Cass, Hearten House 1 and Bethany Riverside Nursing Home.
