Robert J. Nelson, 78, of La Crosse, passed on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at his home. He was born in La Crosse on September 7, 1939 to Herbert and Florence (Mitchell) Nelson. Bob attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute and received the annual printing award for academic achievement.
Bob served in the United States Navy on the USS Saratoga as a lithographer. He was extremely proud of his service and was involved in the current recommission process of the Saratoga. Following his military service he worked as a type setter at the La Crosse Tribune and then as the manager of the Copy Center at Western Technical College from 1975 until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of American Legion Post #52 for 45 years, a member of the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association (WREA), and was an avid fisherman and a Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan.
Bob was a very giving and selfless man. He lived a very simple life but was blessed with so many friends that loved him. He will be truly missed.
He is survived by several cousins and special friends, Nancy and Al Peaslee, Michelle and John Voves and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 1:00 p.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette Street. Pastor Anne M. Hokenstad will officiate and burial with military honors will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday at the funeral home from Noon until time of services.
