Gary Paul Countryman, 75, of Holmen, passed away Sunday, Ocotober 14, 2018. He was born on February 12, 1943 in Gouverneur, New York to Paul Vaughn Countryman and Helena Hall Fuller, he was the 4th of 5 children, his siblings, Sally (Porter), Joyce Countryman (deceased), Linda (Bilby) (deceased) and Michael Countryman.
Right out of High School Gary began serving his country in the U.S. Navy, based out of Long Beach, CA (1961 - 1967). He married the love of his life, Rose Marie Pyka, on August 4, 1962 in West Allis, WI. He began his civilian career with the Telephone & Communications industry after his service ended. Starting in Long Beach, CA, then on to Slinger, WI working for General Telephone Electric (GTE) with his permanent assignment being Holmen, WI where he worked until retirement in 1997 after 40 years. During his life he raised, mentored and loved four children, Wanda (Lehman), Dwayne (Countryman), Gary Jr. (Countryman) and Brenda (White) Countryman.
Gary loved hobbies and helping people. He found that hobbies challenged him to learn new things, once he mastered them he would move on. Hobbies included HO scale trains, radio controlled planes and cars, amateur (HAM) radio, and bagpipes. He was always building, fixing, cleaning and serving others. He was a man of faith who served His Lord diligently for many years as a Scoutmaster, Instructor to both youth and adults, Family History Specialist, and many other teaching, speaking and leadership positions.
In honor of this amazing man there will be an open casket viewing at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home at 515 McHugh Road in Holmen, WI on Friday, October 19 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Gary has requested cremation so on Saturday, October 20, the family has planned a 10:00am visitation, 11:00am memorial service to be followed by a luncheon at 12:30pm, all of which will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints chapel located at 701 Well Street, Onalaska. The family will hold a private graveside service after the memorial service and will join those who stay for the luncheon thereafter.
