Obituary for Rita R. Strauss

Rita Rose (Walter) Strauss, 88, went to eternal life on Sunday, November 18th, 2018 at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse. She was born in Hokah, MN on August 8th, 1930 to Emil and Anna (Lehman) Walter. She is survived by two daughters, Debra (Michael) Pikula of Mount Pleasant and Kathryn (Andrew) Helgerson of La Crosse. She was the proud Grandmother to Derek Opitz, Jennifer Dockham, Lindsey (David) Krueger, Ashley (Steven) Jasinski, and Austin Helgerson. She also was a Great-Grandmother to Maddisyn Marx; Aldren, Alexis, and Tenley Krueger; Dylan, Layla, and Harrison Jasinski. Sister, Irene Jiracek of Onalaska, and brother Raymond (Jean) Walter of West Salem, and her many, many special nieces and nephews.
Rita worked at Montgomery Wards across the street from Wettstein's where her husband John (Doc) worked. After retiring, she was a dedicated volunteer at Franciscan Skemp Gift Shop for many years. She loved golfing and was very proud of her two holes-in-one. Whenever family or friends visited she would make sure to have a plate of Special K bars, which were always devoured.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, son James at the age of 33, sister Mildred, and brothers Alvin, Robert, Herbert, and Jerome.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Mary Mother of the Church (2006 Weston Street, La Crosse, WI 54601) on Saturday, November 24th, 2018, a visitation will be held from 9:00 until 10:30 the day of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Rita to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or at alz.org.
