Darlene (Doll) Gertrude Schiffer, 88, daughter of Beatrice (Olson) and Irvine Lawrence, was born in LaCrosse, WI on 10/18/1930. She was the eldest of 3 daughters, including Carol (Edward) Opdahl and Shirley (Thomas) Clark. Carol and her brother-in-law Tom preceded her in death. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Sister Grace Ann Schiffer, Theresa Schiffer (Joseph) and her brother-in-law Donald (Teresa) Schiffer. Joseph preceded her in death. Many nieces and nephews survive her and will miss her.
Darlene and her husband Francis (Frank) Schiffer (deceased) created a loving family of 7 children. She is survived by these children and their families: Daniel (Michelle Collyar) Schiffer, Debra (Alex Butt) Schiffer, Rhonda Schiffer, Joel Schiffer, Thomas (Cheryl) Schiffer, Francis (Lesa) Schiffer and Jacqueline (Billy Coady) Swan-Coady. A son-in-law, David Swan predeceased her. She is survived by 17 grandchildren, predeceased by one grandchild, Christopher, and leaves behind 7 great grandchildren. They were the lights of her life, and she was the center of theirs.
What a life Darlene lived! Matriarch and foundation of her family, non-judgmental and thoughtful friend to all who crossed her path… and an all-around great individual. She was a favorite waitress to hundreds of New Villa customers over the years and developed lifelong friendships with several co-workers. She loved rummage sales and could spot the antiques and bargains among the junk like a professional picker. Much to the chagrin of her children, many of her treasures were carried home on a bicycle or by foot in the early years, before she started driving in her 40’s. Here comes mom with another bargain. Mom was many things to many people, but will always be remembered for her great cooking, creativity, her beautiful quilting and her ability to make a house a home. She had the whitest whites in the neighborhood!
Goodbye dear mother. Your journey here is complete, but your spirit and your essence remain in our hearts. Thank you for the love, the support, the memories and for being the best mother a person could hope to have.
