Shirley Susette Holzer, age 95, of Onalaska, Wisconsin passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Lakeview Healthcare Center in West Salem, Wisconsin. Shirley was born in Westfield, New York on September 11, 1923 to Ralph and Eugenna (McMerrick) Burden. She was married to Morton James Holzer.
Shirley worked in food service at DeLand High School in Florida serving meals to children. She was the past-president and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 179 Auxiliary in Plaineview, Minnesota. Her free time was spent traveling with her husband, specifically on the Trans-Canada train trip and to Hawaii. She has spent numerous camping seasons at the Leon Valley Campground. She enjoyed crocheting and collecting dolls.
Shirley is survived by her three daughters; Pricilla Higginbotham of Callahan, Florida, Patricia (Robert) Diehlmann of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and Phyllis Bangs of Mabel, Minnesota, eight grandchildren; Sue (Mark) Olson of Phillips, Wisconsin, Linda (Chuck) Connelly of Cashton, Wisconsin, Robert Jr. (Rose) Diehlmann of Rockland, Wisconsin, and Sheila (Steve) Melbostad of Mabel, Minnesota; 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, sister; Aliene Bailey and brother; DeForest Burden.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; Morton Holzer, her parents; Ralph and Eugenna Burden, son; grandson; Shad Bangs, sisters; Lois Dusenbury and Audrey Bowen, and brothers; Ralph Burden, Lamar Burden, and Eugene Burden.
Shirley’s cremated remains will be interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Plaineview, Minnesota at a later date. The Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
