Mike used to hold Viet Nam Vet “Coffee Meetings” where his Viet Nam Buddies would sit around the kitchen table and chat into the wee hours of the morning voicing their opinions and sharing many war memories. He was known for his cooking and he made wonderful chili. Mike enjoyed deer hunting, duck hunting, reloading shells, archery, fletching arrows and he was the Vice President of the Wisconsin Field Archers Association for numerous years. He liked spending time fishing, trout fishing in Coon Creek and making jigs. He liked doing leatherwork and practicing his drums. Above all, Mike was proud of his grandchildren.
He is survived his children; Cheri of La Crosse, Carli and her lifelong friend, Chad of La Crosse and Philip (Michelle) of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, grandchildren; Kimber Leigh Byrd, Phillip Novak, Ezra Novak (recently joined the U.S. Airforce), Kekoa Novak, Dylan Meil, and Kaeli Meil, great-grandchild; James Byrd, sisters; Vicki De Maiffe of French Island and Tracy Meil of Minneapolis, brothers; Kevin Meil of French Island and Kurt Meil of Milwaukee. Additionally, there were many of his Viet Nam pals that went on before him to include; Jack Frietag, Vern Janick, Doug Kurtz, John Guist, and his lifelong friend from childhood to his last day on earth, Paul Opland. Paul and Mike both passed on the same day, April 17, 2019.
