John Michael Merrell was born on November 4th, 1949 to Clifford and Lillian Merrell in La Crosse, Wisconsin. John came from a large family of six brothers; Dennis (Diane), Timothy (Ruth), Richard, Gary (Vicki), James (Dixie), & Thomas, and three sisters; Theresa (Don), Joan (Bryan), and DeEtte (Dan). John married Frances (Franki) Lemon and they lived a happy, loving life together for 49 wonderful years. Together they raised their fine sons, Michael John (Gina) and Joshua John (Heather). John’s family grew with the addition of two loving daughter-in-law’s and three beautiful grandchildren; Jacob, Madison, and Maxwell, and many wonderful nieces and nephews, who enhanced his life with such joy. John was so proud of his family and would do anything for them.
John served our country as an enlisted combat soldier in the central highlands of Vietnam and then continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve. Sergeant First Class John Merrell, having traveled the world in service to the United States of America, retired with distinction, from the U.S. Army Reserve after 24 years. John continued to support the men and women of the Armed Forces and Veterans long after his retirement. John loved the United States and the freedoms it holds to be true and just.
John also found opportunities to serve his local community and home of 45 years as a member of the Melrose-Mindoro School Board, the Mindoro Lutheran Church Council, the American Legion, the Farmington Fire Department, the Farmington 1st Responders, the Mindoro Lions Club, and the La Crosse County Housing Authority.
John was fortunate in that his favorite hobby was his work. John was a journeyman butcher and renown sausage maker. John worked years in the industry eventually owning his own operation, Merrell’s Market-IGA. John continued in the industry after moving on as a business owner to become a meat inspector for the State of Wisconsin.
John had a very fulfilling life. His humble and generous ways earned him respect and admiration from family and friends, which he adored and valued above everything. He believed in giving back and doing the right thing. John felt strongly about helping people find their potential and throughout his years he was able to guide and inspire so many.
John Michael Merrell passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. His absence in our lives will leave an unfillable void. He will be deeply missed.
Through his nine years of illness, the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of the Mayo Clinic Health System have been very attentive and compassionate. The Hospice Team, at the twilight of John’s days, gave him and his family comfort, empathy, respect and love. Our friends and neighbors have been wonderful in their steadfast support and assistance all these years.
