Obituary for Kathy L. Gowdy

Kathy L. Gowdy, 68, of Holmen passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua. She was born in La Crosse on June 1, 1951 to Willard and Viola (Nelson) Bjerke. On August 1, 1992 Kathy married Richard Gowdy and they recently celebrated 27 years of marriage.
Kathy worked for the school district of Holmen for 28 years. She loved the outdoors, she especially liked camping. The last 20 years she spent the summers in Hatfield where she met and made many close friends. One of her favorite things to do there was ride the ATV trails, “the muddier the better.” Kathy also liked decorating her campsite and she always welcomed visitors. Some of her hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, crocheting and cheering on the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers. Kathy’s pride and joy were her children and grandchildren, she loved spending time with them and was proud of each and every one of them.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters, Kimberly (Bill) Reibel and Karla (Brennon) Swaney both of Holmen; son, Dean (Vanessa) Stark of Holmen; twelve grandchildren, Kelsie, Lynsie, Marsie, and Cassie Reibel, Alivia, Ethan, and Preston Swaney, Johna and Ashleigh Stark, and Connor Johnson, Gabby, and Keira Abbott; a brother, Larry Bjerke of Rockland and two nephews, Chad Rominger of Coconut Creek, Florida and Daniel Bjerke of Holmen.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in La Crosse and Sparta, Vernon Manor and Vernon Memorial Hospice.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Holmen Lutheran Church, 228 Morris Street. Pastor Matt Toso will officiate and burial will be in Long Coulee Cemetery, rural Holmen. A visitation will be held on Tuesday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and again at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
