Jeffrey Dean Luke Stolz, 54, of La Crosse, reposed in the Lord on Monday, September 16, 2019 at Gundersen Health System of La Crosse. He was born in Upland, California on November 24, 1964 to Dean and Janet (Wilson) Stolz. Jeff grew up in California, Indiana, and Minnesota. He attended Concordia University-St. Paul and went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning his Master of Fine Arts degree in theater and design in 1993.
Jeff has been the resident costume designer and Professor of Theater at Viterbo University in La Crosse since 1994. He did a great deal of freelance design work at a variety of theaters including Pangea World Theater in Minneapolis, Madison Repertory Theater, Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, and the Commonweal Theater in Lanesboro. He loved creating art, painting, and writing icons. Most recently, he worked with the La Crosse Historical Society to create the Juxtapose exhibit which showcased historic La Crosse dresses and connected them to the specific places in La Crosse where the dresses were worn. He worked for many years as part of the La Crosse Jail Ministry and felt deeply about the importance of prison ministry and the wonderful guys that he was blessed to serve. His family and friends knew him as a force -- always willing to love and give of himself.
Jeff and his wife, Christine, were chrismated into the Holy Orthodox Church on October 18, 2014, and were members of St. Elias Orthodox Church in La Crosse. Jeff served on the Parish Council and as part of the Mediterranean Festival planning team.
In addition to his wife of 31 years, Christine, he is survived by his son, William, of Minneapolis, and daughter, Catherine, of Brooklyn Center. Other survivors include his parents, Dean and Janet Stolz, of Deerwood, Minnesota; a brother, Travis Stolz and his wife Kristin, of Fairfax, Virginia; sister-in-law, Roberta Ross of Rock Hill, South Carolina; brother-in-law, Daniel Meyer and his wife Pat of Amery, Wisconsin; and nieces and a nephew.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to Father Dionysios (Dean) Wilhelm, Drs. Milan (Trey) Folkers, Michael Ojelabi, Patrick Conway, Shanu Kothari, Amit Kulkarni, Mary Morris and the incredible team of health care professionals at Gundersen Health System and all the extended family, friends, and neighbors who have made our cross easier to bear.
Visitation will be held at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson Street, La Crosse on Friday, September 20 from 4-6 pm. A funeral service will be held at Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church, 703 W. Center Street, Rochester, Minnesota, on Saturday, September 21 at 10:30 am with Father Mark Munoz officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
Contributions may be made to the La Crosse Jail Ministry or St. Elias Orthodox Church.
