David D. Holtze, Sr. age 72, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday September 26th, 2019. He was born to Marian Ritter in La Crosse, WI. Married Lynn M. (Hofer) Holtze in 1966 and they had three children.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn of La Crosse; his children David D. Holtze, Jr. and his wife Becca, Kenosha, WI; Dean M. Holtze and his wife Teresa, Los Lunas, NM; and Terri Holtze, Louisville, KY. He is also survived by his mother, Marian Schnell, La Crosse; his brother Richard Schnell and his wife, Cathy, Rochester, MN; grandsons,Vincent Erickson-Holtze,Tomah; Kyle Economy and his fiancée, Morgan Fuller, Reedsburg; and Seth Morris and his fiancée Karri-Kruse-Hubanks, Poynette, great granddaughter, Ellie Rae Economy. Surviving in laws are Steve and Peggy Hofer, Maple Grove, MN; Tom and Kate Edwards, Black River Falls; Terri Hofer, La Crescent, MN; Joe Justman, La Crescent, MN; Steve and Beth Deneau, N. St. Paul, MN; Tom and Mary Hofer, La Crosse; and special friend Lois Wakeen, Cashton. He also had dozens of Schnell, Butterfield, Stang, Hofer, and Jolivette nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Holtze;stepfather, Richard Schnell;in laws, Edward and Lillian Hofer;brother-in-law, Michael Hofer, and sister-in-law, Jean Justman.
Dave was very active in community and government affairs both in La Crosse and Kenosha where he lived for 30 years.He and Lynn moved back to La Crosse in 1998 when they got the contract to open Forest Hills which they managed until 2006. He gave 40 years of his life to government and public service. In the last 8 years of his life he served on the La Crosse County Board representing the 12th district serving on many committees including 2 years on the Executive Committee. He was also active on the Wisconsin Counties Association and served as La Crosse County Ambassador to WCA for 7 years. He was President of the La Crosse Chapter of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, active in Wisconsin Restaurant Association and was Restaurateur of the year twice. He served 5 years on LACVB and was President in 2008; served 15 years on the Irishfest Board of Directors, 20 years as a member of Shamrock Club, and was Irish Man of the Year in 2006. He was a member of the Democratic Party in 2 counties and statewide since he was a 12-year-old and handed a La Crosse Tribune to John Kennedy. He received an invitation to 2 inaugurations. In Kenosha County, he served 8 years on the Kenosha County Board and 14 years as Somers Town Chairman. He managed Petrifying Springs Golf Course for many years and was Director of Parks for a time.
Service times are Monday visitation, 4-6pm at Dickinson Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse, WI; Tuesday visitation 10-11am; service 11am and lunch to follow at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston St., La Crosse, WI. Interment will be after lunch at Oak Grove Cemetery, 1407 La Crosse St, La Crosse, WI.
