Jim (Gordon James) Newmann passed peacefully in his sleep at his home in Trempealeau, WI on Saturday morning November 2, 2019 at age 67. He was born on January 24, 1952 in Winona, MN to parents James and Isabel (McCrimmon) Newmann, and the family later moved to Trempealeau in 1964 where he and Donna Mae Adams met at church. They were married at that same church 10 years later on June 1, 1974 and raised their two children in Whitewater until 2018 when they returned to Trempealeau to enjoy retirement.
As a youth, Jim excelled at track, basketball, and baseball, then later enjoyed Whitewater community adult volleyball and softball leagues. Jim graduated in 1970 from Trempealeau High School, and from UW-Whitewater in 1976. He worked in the Industrial Engineering field for 41 years, first at Alpha Cast and then Weiler and Co./Provisur Technologies.
Anyone who knew him appreciated his quiet kindness, strength, faith, and eager willingness to help others. He led dozens of youth mission trips around the country. Jim never gave up on anyone or anything in his entire life. He persevered through over 60 years of health complications from type 1 diabetes, refused to complain and remained as active as possible. He was incredibly thankful for every day he had to spend with his family and friends. A dedicated father and grandpa, Jim loved to support his children and then grandchildren in all their endeavors—you could regularly find him at a field, stage, rink, or court.
Although Jim was definitely a man of few words, when he spoke it was always worth listening. When he laughed, he laughed long, and anyone who heard could not help but join. His compassion and care extended beyond the people he loved to his pet dogs and cats. Jim enjoyed traveling, and one of his favorite destinations was Great Smokey Mountains National Park, TN where he could observe wild black bears like the ones he loved to collect. He and Donna were blessed to be able to spend 10 days there together just weeks ago.
He will be missed dearly by his wife Donna, children Cory (Dana) Newmann of Whitewater, WI and Shanna (Mike) Mliner of Blaine, MN, granddaughters Madelynn, Leah, and Kayleigh Newmann, grandsons Troy and Blake Mliner, twin brother Jack Newmann, sister Karen (Steve) Sheetz, brothers-in-law Earl (Lynn) Adams and Larry (Rhonda) Adams, sister-in-law Diane Adams Hubbard, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives, friends, church and community members of both Whitewater and Trempealeau.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at Trempealeau United Methodist Church, 24255 4th St, Trempealeau, WI 54661. Pastor Mary Beth Scow will officiate. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:00am to time of service.
